Many parents in arrears for child support wrongly believe that their obligation to repay their debt ends once the child turns 18. However, some custodial parents are turning to private child support collection agencies to recoup back payments that can be decades old. In the case of Lina and Sam Bragg, divorced since 1976, one collection agency is seeking to garnish payments from Mr. Bragg’s Social Security to recover more $49,000 in unpaid child support.
